Materia e luce del Divino. Venanzio Manciocchi

Retrospective of the painter Venanzio Manciocchi, with works from the last twenty years between figuration and informal abstraction, which seek the divine in colour and light. It is part of the series “Dialoghi contemporanei”.

About the museum

The Sermoneta section of the diocesan museum was set up to recover and make accessible paintings and sacred furnishings that belong to the municipal and diocesan heritage, largely from churches no longer used for worship. Between the 14th and 18th centuries Sermoneta enjoyed considerable prosperity, still evident in the imposing Caetani castle, owned by the powerful Roman family from 1297.

The museum is housed in rooms of the complex of the collegiate church of Santa Maria Assunta, in the ancient 15th-century chapel of the Magi and in the adjoining Oratorio dei Battenti. The halls display paintings by important artists such as Girolamo Siciolante da Sermoneta, with the Incoronazione della Vergine (Coronation of the Virgin), and Francesco da Castello, a fresco cycle by Domenico Fiorentini and the Saint Michael the Archangel by Frans Van de Kasteele, dated 1595. The sacred furnishings of the 15th to 18th centuries include scourges, chalices, pyxes, alms dishes, illuminated choir books, reliquaries and vestments that document the religious life of the Confraternita dei Battenti and of the town.

In the nearby church of Santa Maria, of Cistercian design, there are further works of note, including the Madonna degli Angeli by Benozzo Gozzoli and paintings by Desiderio da Subiaco and by the circle of the Cavalier d’Arpino. Together with the Sezze branch, the museum forms part of the diocesan museum network of the Diocese of Latina-Terracina-Sezze-Priverno.
