About the museum
A first permanent collection was set up in 1969 by the Comitato Culturale Pradis and the Gruppo Speleologico Pradis in the village's old primary school. After the earthquake of 1976 the museum closed and only reopened to the public in 2001, in its present location near the Grotte Verdi.
The route presents the world of the caves through the animals and people who frequented them. It is organised in four sections: the cave bear; the caves, with the hunters' camp of around 14,000 years ago in the Grotta del Clusantin; the Caverna Mainarda, with a late Roman bronze bracelet; and a section on fossils and minerals, with particular attention to calcite.
The museum is run by the Associazione Culturale Pradis and is part of the Ecomuseo regionale delle Dolomiti Friulane (Friulian Dolomites regional ecomuseum) “Lis Aganis”.
