About the museum
The mill of Borgo Ampiano stands along the Cosa stream, outside the village of Valeriano, in the municipality of Pinzano al Tagliamento. It is documented from 1320 and was powered by a channel diverted from the nearby watercourse: it first ground barley, then maize, wheat, chestnuts and carob. Over the centuries the building was enlarged and altered several times.
In 1930 a Francis turbine was installed, which drove a timber saw and a threshing machine and also supplied lighting to the hamlet. The mill was restored in 2004 with regional funds; during the works the barley-hulling room came to light again.
The route is on two floors. On the ground floor there is a small forge and carpentry workshop for repairs, the central room with the millstones and the roller mills of Hungarian manufacture, and the barley-hulling room. On the upper floor there is another room with various cereal machines and the small turret with sieves for separating flour. Traces of a fresco of the Madonna and Child attributed to Pordenone survive on the façade; it was detached in 1957 and is now in the Museo civico di Conegliano. On the back of the façade a recent work by Vittorio Basaglia is painted. The mill is part of the Ecomuseo Lis Aganis and hosts exhibitions and educational activities.
