About the museum
The archaeological collection is housed in Villa Savorgnan in Lestans, a hamlet of Sequals, and is curated by the Gruppo Archeologico Archeo 2000. It displays material from research and excavations in the foothill area between the Tagliamento and Meduna rivers, in particular in the area of Sequals and around Solimbergo castle.
The route covers a very long period, from prehistory to the Renaissance. Among the oldest pieces are stone tools of the Mousterian period, attributed to Neanderthal man and coming from the Sequals marsh, followed by Mesolithic finds from several sites (Prà Feletta, Casera Valinis, Borgo Ampiano, Monte Ciaurleç) and Neolithic and Eneolithic materials. The Bronze Age, the castellieri (fortified hilltop settlements), and Lombard and Carolingian remains are also documented.
A major part of the collection concerns the Roman imperial age, with grave goods from four necropolises, the remains of a rustic villa and evidence from six settlements.
In the same building, on the second floor, is the ethnographic collection “Casa del '900”, run by the Società operaia di mutuo soccorso e istruzione (SOMSI) of Lestans: it recreates rooms of a peasant house and of a middle-class villa with early 20th-century furnishings, and keeps on its walls the complete series of the “Domenica del Corriere”.
