About the museum
The Museo Alfonsiano is located in Pagani, in the complex of the basilica and religious house founded in 1742 by Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, founder of the Redemptorists. The house holds the saint’s remains and also houses the provincial archive of the Redemptorists, a library and a picture gallery; the museum was inaugurated by Pope John Paul II in 1990.
The route traces the saint’s life through objects and personal items: among them are the harpsichord on which he is said to have composed the Christmas carol “Tu scendi dalle stelle”, a ceramic nativity scene from Capodimonte, liturgical vestments, letters, books, instruments of penance, his wheelchair and a funerary mask in wax. They are displayed in the saint’s cell, preserved in its original form.
The picture gallery holds about one hundred paintings, including works by sixteenth-century painters influenced by Flemish art, such as Decio Tramontano and Teodoro d’Errico, and works from the school of Francesco Solimena. The museum and the rooms where the saint lived can be visited every day of the year by reservation.
