About the museum
The old water mill is in Turano, in the municipality of Valvestino, on the Toscolano stream. According to the cadastral registers of the Province of Tyrol, it was already operating in 1860. It was privately owned: the valley's inhabitants brought their grain there to be ground and paid the miller, known as the Massaro, after the grinding.
The building is a remarkable example of a historically significant milling workshop and preserves the original millstones. On the ground floor there are two rooms, each with a wooden palmento (grinding trough). The external wooden water wheels have been fully rebuilt, while a third wheel drove a grindstone that the miller used to sharpen his iron tools.
Today the mill belongs to the Comunità Montana Parco Alto Garda Bresciano, which recently restored it, and it is run by the Ecomuseo della Valvestino. The visit route shows millstones, hoppers and palmenti, with panels explaining how the mill works, the daily life of the miller and the cereals grown in the valley: maize, wheat and barley.
