About the museum
The “alla veneziana” sawmill (Venetian-style sawmill) of Valvestino was built in 1913 by Stefano Viani and was the first in the valley, where until then tree trunks had been sawn by hand. It was later run by the Feltrinelli company until after the Second World War; the same company also contributed to building the road from Navazzo di Gargnano, which connected the valley in 1934. A monument to Giuseppe Feltrinelli stands nearby, at Bersaglio. A cableway was to connect the sawmill to Cassanega, near Cadria, but only the drawings of that project survive.
In the 1950s the Feltrinelli sawyer, Bruno Donati, took over the plant and switched from water power to electricity. The machine worked on the principle of the vertical water saw: water channelled onto a wheel moved a crank-and-connecting-rod mechanism. The ERSAF restored the sawmill, which is now run by the Ecomuseo della Valvestino.
The sawmill is in perfect working order and is an example of the valley’s industrial archaeology. It lies in the locality of Cola, to the right of the provincial road to Magasa, about 300 metres from the roundabout.
