About the museum

The museum originates from the discovery, at Baccano along the Via Cassia, of a Roman mansio (a staging post for travellers), studied through extensive excavations and considered one of the few secure examples of this type of structure. From those discoveries the Museo Archeologico di Campagnano took shape, opened in December 1989 in the 18th-century Palazzo Venturi, beside Porta Romana, as a museum of the local territory to protect and enhance the local archaeological heritage.

The current Museo Archeologico del Pellegrino has gathered that experience and expanded it with finds previously kept in storerooms. The display follows a chronological and topographical order and develops on two levels: the history of the territory and the theme of travel, from transport to roads, from worship to pilgrimage. The narrative is designed in network with the nearby museums and is addressed to the citizens and to pilgrims of the Via Francigena.

The seat is a 19th-century building: in 1818 the former granary known as “Fabrica de Scarnicchia” was assigned to the stables of a papal mounted Carabinieri unit, tasked with supervising the Cassia and the Corso Postale. Mangers, doors and racks can still be seen in the rooms today. The route includes the Etruscan materials from the Quarticciolo tomb and from Vallelunga, the Roman ones from Maggiorana and from the Casalino villa, and the context of the mansio of Baccano.
