About the museum

The Museo Archeologico di Campagnano opened in December 1989 in Palazzo Venturi, a 17th-century noble palace at the entrance to the historic centre, following the discovery and excavation of the Roman mansio (roadside inn) of Baccano, along the Via Cassia. It is one of the few examples identified with certainty of a building designed to host travellers. The museum began as a local-area museum, to protect and promote the archaeological heritage of the territory.

The new Museo Archeologico del Pellegrino has built on that experience, expanding it with finds that were previously kept in storerooms. The museum narrative follows chronological and topographical criteria and runs on two levels: the history of the area and the theme of travel, among roads, cults and pilgrimage along the Via Cassia, Via Amerina and Via Francigena. The museum is housed in the former granary known as the “Fabrica de Scarnicchia”, which in 1818 was converted into stables for a unit of mounted papal carabinieri. The first room includes sections on the territory and landscape, the Etruscan period (Quarticciolo tomb, materials from Vallelunga) and the Roman period.
