About the museum
The museums of San Lorenzo in Campo are housed in the Palazzo della Rovere, a 16th-century building in the historic centre, near the Teatro Mario Tiberini and the Benedictine Abbey. The Museo Archeologico del Territorio di Suasa presents evidence from the surrounding area, including material linked to the Roman town of Suasa.
On the top floor of the palace is the Museo Etnografico Africano, named after Dr Gello Giorgi, a physician, archaeologist and historian who, between 1956 and 1972, while working as a missionary in West Africa, sent material he had collected to San Lorenzo in Campo. Five rooms display objects mainly from Sierra Leone: apotropaic figures in stone and bone, masks, weapons, musical instruments and toys, alongside coins, stamps, fossils, minerals and natural history collections. The museum was rearranged and reopened to the public in 2024.
The Stanza dei Francobolli (stamp room) can also be visited in the same palace. With a combined ticket the archaeological and ethnographic sections can be visited together.
