About the museum
Palazzo Parisani Bezzi is known as “Casa della Pace” because the Peace of Tolentino between Pope Pius VI and Napoleon Bonaparte was signed there on 19 February 1797. The building was commissioned by Cardinal Ascanio, with a design attributed to Antonio da Sangallo the Younger around 1540; the façade, with a limestone portal, dates from the 17th century.
On the piano nobile are the Sale Napoleoniche, which make up the museum: a reception hall with period furniture and documents on the Peace of Tolentino, a 17th-century drawing room with furnishings and paintings, the room lined with red damask with the canopy bed in which the general slept in February 1797, and a small room with the table on which the treaty was signed, still stained with ink. The route is completed by a corridor with paintings and tapestries from the 17th and 18th centuries, and a bathroom with a richly decorated vault.
The palace has been closed since the 2016 earthquake.
