About the museum
The museum occupies the rooms that once housed the school attached to the Augustinian convent beside the basilica of San Nicola da Tolentino. The eight rooms hold works and objects ranging from the 4th–5th century to the 20th century, largely donated over time to the basilica and linked to the figure of the saint, to the life of the sanctuary and to the town.
The route includes paintings, wooden sculptures, furnishings, goldsmiths’ work, sacred objects, ceramics and archaeological finds. Among the works are the Cona di San Nicola di Marchisiano di Giorgio, painted between 1513 and 1526, and canvases by Simone De Magistris and Domenico Malpiedi, as well as a 14th-century wooden group of the Nativity.
An important core is formed by the ex-voto offerings: about 140 silver ex-votos that survived the Napoleonic requisitions and 381 ex-votos on panel, canvas and paper, dating from the late 15th to the early 19th century. The ceramics collection, largely from the Marche, Umbria and Abruzzo areas, with some Venetian, Roman and Tuscan majolica, was donated to the town in 1929 by Cardinal Giovanni Tacci. The museum also includes reliquaries and a diorama from 1999 on the life of the saint.
