About the museum
The museum was founded in 1970 by Luigi Mari, a doctor, artist and mayor of Tolentino in the 1950s, who in 1961 had created the Biennale della Caricatura, later renamed Biennale internazionale dell’Umorismo nell’Arte. The museum grew out of the Biennale and is considered the first institution of its kind in Italy and in the world.
The first core of the collection consists of the works that won the Premio Marcorelli, to which many original drawings donated by Enrico Gianeri, known as Gec, were added. Today the museum holds more than 4,000 original works, including drawings, paintings, sculptures, prints and engravings, which grow every year through acquisitions and donations.
The route, housed in Palazzo Sangallo, includes the Sala Storica, the Sala delle Biennali with the works that won since 1961, the Sala delle Caricature, the Sala Tirelli dedicated to papier-mâché puppets by Umberto Tirelli, and the Sala Mari. Among others, Galantara, Dudovich, Scarpelli, Maccari, Longanesi, Fellini, Altan, Gulbransson, Searle, Mordillo, Folon, Sempé and Topor are represented. The museum also has a specialised library with the catalogues of all the Biennales since 1961.
