About the museum
The archaeological museum of Cingoli opened to the public in 1994 and was extended in 1997. Founded as a local museum, it holds materials from excavations in the municipal area. Since December 2014 it has been run by the Ministry of Culture, first through the Polo museale delle Marche and since December 2019 through the Direzione regionale Musei (Regional Directorate of Museums).
It is housed on the ground floor and in the basement of the 16th-century Palazzo Raffaelli, seat of the town hall on Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. The route has four sections: prehistory, with stone tools from the Palaeolithic to the Neolithic, among the oldest in the Marche; the Bronze Age, with finds from the Moscosi settlement at Piano di Fonte Marcosa; protohistory and Romanisation, with materials from the San Vittore water sanctuary (6th century BC); and the Roman collection.
The Roman collection includes ceramics, bronzes, glass, architectural decorations, a lapidarium with inscriptions, some sculptures, among them the limestone statue of the Phrygian god Attis, and coins from the Republican period to the late Imperial age.
