About the museum
Palazzo Castiglioni stands on Corso Garibaldi, in the centre of Cingoli, and is the historic home of the Castiglioni family, the Marche branch of a house of Milanese origin. According to local sources the building arose from the union of two pre-existing houses, whose structures remain recognisable, with two twin doorways; one source places the purchase of the palazzo by Bernardo Castiglioni in 1599.
The palazzo preserves the furnishings and personal belongings of Francesco Saverio Castiglioni, born in Cingoli in 1761 and later Pope Pius VIII. The palazzo is still inhabited by descendants of the family, who open it to visitors as a house museum.
Among the rooms open to visitors are the portrait of Pius VIII by Vincenzo Camuccini, the marble bust of the pontiff, a 17th-century sedan chair, the chapel, the papal bedchamber, the library and the Salone della Musica (Music Hall), whose ceiling of nine octagonal domes decorated with grotesques is a unique example in the Marche.
