About the museum

The Fondazione Museo Cappeller arose from the wish of Luciano Cappeller, owner of the eponymous wildlife park, to share his taxidermy collection with visitors. The idea of creating a museum took shape after an encounter, during an exhibition, with his long-time friend Dr Miolo, who was showing a replica of Lucy, the Australopithecus afarensis. The museum opened in 2009, in the bicentenary year of Charles Darwin's birth.

The route opens with a room devoted to human evolution, from Proconsul to Australopithecus afarensis, from Homo erectus to Homo sapiens, with the main discoveries reproduced at life size. In the second part visitors journey through the continents, meeting the animals that inhabit them: a collection of around 5,000 specimens, intended to remind us that animals are a heritage to be respected while alive and preserved once they are gone.

The exhibition covers about 2,400 square metres, from the prehistory room to the halls of the continents, and up to the most recent pavilion, devoted to invertebrates. The museum is located inside the Parco Faunistico Cappeller, in Cartigliano, and also offers educational activities for schools and groups.
