About the museum
The building, at the entrance to the Grotte di Oliero, is what remains of the former Parolini paper mill. Paper production at Oliero was started as early as the 17th century by the Remondini family, thanks to the steady flow of the river, and supported one of the main printing industries, which reached its greatest development between the 18th and 19th centuries and sold its products throughout Europe. The Parolini had the vats for macerating rags in this very building, and traces of them are clearly visible, integrated into the new display.
The museum opened in 2014 and enriches the cultural offer of the Canal di Brenta, alongside the Museo etnografico Canal di Brenta and the museum of artistic stonecutting crafts of Valbrenta.
The route traces the stages of the invention of paper, with the tools and machinery used to make it, rag pulps and fine examples of sheets from the local paper mills. It also shows that wasps have been making paper for millions of years to build their nests, and that today's tablets share a link with the clay tablets of ancient Mesopotamia.
