About the museum
The first collection was formed in 1785, when the governor of Jesi handed the town administration a group of Roman sculptures found the previous year at the convent of San Floriano. With further finds from the territory, the collection passed in 1867 to the Palazzo della Signoria and then, at the beginning of the 1990s, to the Pinacoteca civica of Palazzo Pianetti.
In 2003 the collections returned to the former complex of San Floriano, where they were turned into a true archaeological museum of the territory. That venue was closed and dismantled in 2007. Since 15 December 2017 the museum has had a new home in the former stables of Palazzo Pianetti, and it is the last of the palace's museums to have been inaugurated.
The display follows a chronological order, from the Palaeolithic to the Roman era, with finds from the city of Jesi and the Media Vallesina area. Notable are the Picene grave goods, the Julio-Claudian sculptural cycle and a rich collection of Daunian vases that entered the holdings in 1983 through a private donation. The museum is part of the Musei Civici di Palazzo Pianetti, together with the civic picture gallery and the Galleria di arte contemporanea (Gallery of Contemporary Art).
