About the museum
The museum is housed in the Palazzo delle Contesse, an elegant late 18th-century Venetian villa, recognisable by its “a pigna” (pine-cone) chimneys of Venetian tradition. The building was erected by the Del Zotto family and retains a grand hall with a Venetian-style terrazzo floor decorated with the Arab phoenix, the heraldic symbol of the Papadopoli family, and a fresco attributed to the painter Antonio Bettio from Belluno.
Since 1996 the palazzo has housed the museum, created by the local community and the administrations in collaboration with the Soprintendenza. It displays material found mainly in excavations of the pre-Roman necropolis of Mel, one of the most important sites in Veneto and northern Italy.
The route tells the story of more than forty thousand years of Valbelluna history, from the first Palaeolithic hunter communities to the ancient Veneti, and from the Roman period to the Middle Ages.
