About the museum
The civic museum of Blera is named after King Gustavo VI Adolfo di Svezia, a passionate archaeologist who on 10 October 1956 launched the excavations at San Giovenale in the territory of Blera, together with scholars and students of the Swedish Institute of Classical Studies in Rome.
The museum aims to preserve the heritage and document local customs and traditions, using panels, objects, captions, computer terminals, audiovisual material, dioramas and soundscapes. The upper floor illustrates the relationship between people and horses in prehistoric and protohistoric times; the lower floor and the outdoor area present modern and contemporary life, with the folklore of the Maremma and the Roman countryside and around six hundred objects of rural culture.
The museum’s services are run by the Associazione Amici del Cavallo Maremmano (Friends of the Maremma Horse association), which also offers educational activities. The museum is part of the Sistema Museale Tematico Demos (Demos thematic museum system).
