About the museum
The civic archaeological museum is located in the centre of the medieval village of Barbarano Romano, within the Sant’Angelo complex, which dates from the 13th century. It is described as a territorial museum: the display is linked to the Parco regionale Marturanum and to the relationship between the ancient settlement of San Giuliano and the surrounding territory, where the extensive rock-cut necropolis extends.
The funerary architecture of the Viterbo Tuscia at Barbarano stands out for its monumental forms and decorations that are still visible: circular tumuli and cube-shaped tombs carved into the walls of volcanic tuff, set among woods and springs. The museum proposes combining a visit to the finds with a walk along the paths of the park.
The collection presents ceramic classes and finds from rock-cut Etruria, including Attic black-figure vases such as a stamnos and a column-krater, as well as bronze objects and Etruscan ceramics. The museum’s website also hosts an online library with publications on the Etruscans of rock-cut Etruria.
