About the museum

The Museo d’Arte dello Splendore (MAS) opened on 27 July 1997 at the wish of the Capuchin friar Father Serafino Colangeli, in the building that housed a friars' study house from 1938 to 1965. It is located within the complex of the Santuario della Madonna dello Splendore. Since 2002 it has been a public-private foundation, set up by the Fondazione Piccola Opera Charitas and the Comune di Giulianova, and the Abruzzo Region has recognised it as a first-category museum.

The museum extends over three floors, covering around 1,200 square metres. The ground floor houses, as an open store, the art collection of the Capuchin friars of Abruzzo, which came here after the damage caused by the 2009 earthquake to the Santa Chiara complex in L’Aquila. It includes works by Bedeschini, from the school of Pompeo Cesura and by Brandi, Bernardino Ciferri, Carl Ruthart and Jusepe de Ribera. The second floor hosted the Collezione Bindi until 2019 and is now used for exhibitions. The third floor has the conference hall and the permanent collection of paintings, sculptures and prints by contemporary artists, including Paladino, Messina, Sassu, Rouault and Benetton.
