About the museum
The Museo dei Castelli di Sardegna is located in the heart of Burgos, in the Goceano, in a late 19th-century manor house that belonged to a local landowning family. The building, restored and renovated, spans three floors and presents a route through themed rooms dedicated to the Sardinian Middle Ages of fortresses, wars and treaties, with particular attention to the four giudicati (medieval Sardinian states) of Calaris, Arborea, Torres and Gallura.
Part of the museum hosts exhibitions on the theme of castles, while another displays thematic maps of the coastal towers of the Spanish period and the island's strategic defence points. One area is devoted to the reconstruction of rural life, with work tools and implements of various shapes, while another displays old and recent photographs of the castles. The route ends with a multimedia room that allows a historical reading of about one hundred Sardinian castles.
The visit to the museum is linked to the guided excursion to Burgos Castle, also called Castello del Goceano, a few hundred metres away along a cobbled path. The fortress, built around 1134 at the wish of Gonario I of Torres, stands on a granite rock and preserves the triple circuit of walls and the great tower.
