About the museum

The Museo diocesano d’arte sacra di Sezze is housed in the Palazzo dei canonici, next to the cathedral of Santa Maria. The building has medieval origins, and its present appearance reflects 18th-century alterations. Here the canons serving the cathedral lived in common; later the palace kept representative functions and housed the chapter library, the cathedral treasury, the archive and the chapter hall of the canons.

Thanks to state funds channelled through the Lazio Region for the 2000 Jubilee and to a contribution from the Italian Episcopal Conference (eight-per-mille funds), the rooms were restored and reorganised to house the museum’s collections. The venue was inaugurated on 2 July 2010 by the diocesan bishop Giuseppe Petrocchi. Together with the chapter archive and the mother church it forms the Polo culturale della Chiesa di Sezze, within the diocesan museum network of the Diocese of Latina-Terracina-Sezze-Priverno, which also includes the Sermoneta branch.

The route runs through five halls. The first welcomes visitors and displays a statue of Saint Anthony of Padua, silver reliquaries and the wooden episcopal chair; next comes the vestment hall, with the gifts of Cardinal Pietro Marcellino Corradini, and the hall of bust reliquaries of the 17th and 18th centuries. The goldsmiths’ hall holds chalices, monstrances and reliquaries of the 15th to 18th centuries, and the last hall houses the cathedral’s picture gallery, with the altarpiece of Christ the Saviour by Giovanni da Gaeta, dated 1472.
