About the museum
The Museo dell’Intreccio Mediterraneo (MIM) is housed in the Doria fortress in Castelsardo, a 12th-century military structure built by the Doria family as a stronghold of the Genoese defensive system in Sardinia. The castle setting, with its walls and walkways, is an integral part of the visit.
The collection documents objects made by weaving plant fibres from across the Mediterranean and functions as a true documentation centre. The route unfolds over nine rooms on two floors. On the ground floor the rooms focus mainly on working techniques, while the upper floor presents areas of use such as bread, domestic life, lake and sea fishing, agriculture and herding. On display in particular are the traditional baskets of Castelsardo, corbule (large baskets), sieves and riddles, as well as objects linked to magical and religious life.
Among the most striking pieces is “su fassoi”, a boat made by weaving rush with marsh hay and reed pegs (chiodi di canna), used by fishermen on the ponds of Cabras and Santa Giusta. The visit includes the panoramic terraces, the restored watchwalks and the drawbridge. The same ticket gives access to the MOG, the Museo delle Origini Genovesi (Museum of Genoese Origins).
