About the museum

The MUB is housed in a building that once hosted a convent of Poor Clares, converted into an exhibition space in 1983 and extended in 1998. It tells of the relationship between people and the amphibious territory of the Lower Piave, shaped over the centuries by hydraulic works and the great land reclamation.

In 2018 the museum was reorganised as an ecomuseum, with a route through the history of the area from antiquity to today: the Roman and late-antique presence, rural life before the reclamation and the First World War along the Piave. In 2021 a space devoted to the Great War and the reclamation was opened, with multimedia content accessible through an app developed in the cross-border Interreg project WALKofPEACE.

The section on the war displays weapons, objects recovered from the trenches of the Piave, and uniforms and equipment of the Austro-Hungarian and Italian armies, with a part dedicated to the aviation ace Giannino Ancillotto, born in San Donà. The museum is part of the Musei Civici Sandonatesi, together with the Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea and the Spazio Mostre “I. Battistella”, and has a library, documentary and photographic archives, a conference hall, an audiovisual room, classrooms and a bookshop.
