About the museum
The museum opened on 2 June 1996 and is named after Guido Fregonese. The exhibits were donated to the Comune di Oderzo by the Gruppo Apicoltori Apat, and the museum presents itself as the first public museum devoted to beekeeping in Italy.
The route begins with the bugno, the traditional handcrafted skep made from local materials such as wood, straw, osier, clay and cork, and traces the long history of beekeeping, which goes back about seven thousand years in Mesopotamia and Egypt. A large part of the building is devoted to the hive and its historical evolution, with prints, drawings, macrophotographs and artworks depicting bees.
Outside there is a teaching apiary and a bee garden with plants that provide nectar and pollen. According to the 2015 inventory the collection numbers over one thousand three hundred items, including skeps, hives, tools, books and Italian and foreign honeys. The museum is twinned with other beekeeping museums in Italy and France.
