About the museum

The Museo dello Sbarco di Anzio is dedicated to the Allied landing of 22 January 1944 (Operation Shingle) and to the long battle that followed on the beachhead. It was inaugurated on 22 January 1994, for the fiftieth anniversary, on the initiative of the association Centro di ricerca e documentazione dello sbarco e della battaglia di Anzio, which still runs it today.

The museum is housed in a room of the historic Villa Adele, a 17th-century building a short distance from the railway station and the town centre. The display is organised into four sections, devoted to the forces that faced each other at Anzio: American, British, German and Italian. Each contains uniforms, weapons, decorations, documents, battle plans, photographs of veterans and everyday objects.

The collections also include flags, period prints, motorcycles and other finds, which grow through donations from museums, veterans' associations and private individuals in the countries involved. Many objects come from the seabed off Anzio, where aircraft, landing craft and sunken ships still lie, including the British destroyer Janus, the cruiser Spartan and the hospital ship St. David. The museum also has a photo archive, an audio archive, a library and a periodicals collection.
