About the museum
The Brandolini-Rota College in Oderzo was founded in 1889, and the attached natural history museum was created in 1938 as a teaching laboratory for the scientific secondary school (liceo scientifico). The college is run by the Giuseppini del Murialdo Fathers.
The museum extends for almost 200 metres in length across an area of about 500 square metres. It comprises four rooms devoted to geology, palaeontology, zoology and the Giol ornithological collection, which was donated to the Giuseppini in 1989.
The Giol collection has 900 specimens and documents the birdlife of the Veneto and of Italy in the 20th century, from the 1930s to the 1960s. Among the specimens stands out a Bulweria fallax Jouanin, the only record in the Mediterranean, caught at Cimadolmo. The route also includes the skeleton of a Neolithic inhumed individual from the Veneto, found at Thiene and dating from around 6,000 years ago, and numerous birds, including birds of prey such as eagles and barn owls.
Among the most important holdings is the graphic herbarium of Padre Nardini, with 7,000 pen-and-ink and watercolour drawings of species from Italian and non-European flora. A classroom with cases of minerals, rocks, shells and starfish serves as a teaching laboratory where pupils can examine the specimens directly.
