Dalí e Martini, nel segno di Dante

The exhibition brings Alberto Martini's illustrations for the Divine Comedy into dialogue with 36 woodcuts by Salvador Dalí, supplemented by works by Simon Benetton on loan from the Museo Benetton.

About the museum

The Pinacoteca was founded in 1967, when Oderzo devoted a major retrospective exhibition to its artist Alberto Martini (1876–1954) and his widow Maria Petringa donated the Self-Portrait of 1911. A few years later, another eighty pieces joined the core collection, and in 1970 the municipal administration officially established the Pinacoteca, first in the town hall and then, from 1974, in a building in Via Garibaldi. Since 1994 the collection has been housed on the top floor of Palazzo Foscolo.

Palazzo Foscolo is a sixteenth-century Venetian villa built for Alessandro Contarini, with a staircase rich in stuccoes and portals attributed to Alessandro Vittoria; one of the two barchesse (agricultural wings) houses the Museo Archeologico “Eno Bellis”. Through subsequent bequests, the Martini collection now numbers about 700 works, along with a valuable personal archive of the artist.

The route is organised in thematic sections: the artist’s early graphic work and the illustrations for Tassoni’s “La secchia rapita”, the plates devoted to the tales of Edgar Allan Poe, the Self-Portrait of 1911, the cycle of the “Misteri”, the images inspired by the “Divina Commedia” and the mature works, from the portraits of Maria Petringa to surrealist subjects, up to “Finestra di Psiche”. On the ground floor, GAMCO (Galleria Arte Moderna e Contemporanea Oderzo) presents painters and printmakers connected with the town, while a section is devoted to the collection of art glass by Attilia Zava.
