About the museum
The museum was founded next to the Colle Leone Astronomical Observatory, set up by the amateur astronomer Fausto Marini in Mosciano Sant’Angelo. It is a scientific, popular-science and educational collection devoted to palaeontology, mineralogy and meteoritics.
The collection of minerals and fossils is still housed temporarily in the observatory's spaces, pending completion of the permanent premises. The Abruzzo Region recognised it in 1998 as a museum of local interest, and the Ministero dei Beni Culturali (Ministry of Cultural Heritage) protects its existence and its holdings.
Several hundred minerals and fossils have been on display for years; others are being prepared for the new premises. The exhibition area is visited after the “Fausto Marini” planetarium show and before observing the sky through the telescope.
