About the museum
The museum grew out of the passion of Franco Rossi, municipal surveyor of Cupramontana, who was the first to remove labels from wine bottles in order to collect them, and soon began receiving them from all over the world. In 1987, thanks to an idea and the support of the Jesi art critic Armando Ginesi, the collection became public: it was housed in Palazzo Leoni until 2016 and then moved to the MIG – Musei in Grotta. Today the municipality owns more than 90,000 labels from Italy and around the world.
The MIG occupies the basement floor of the former Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria Maddalena, later merged with that of Santa Caterina and Margherita, in a labyrinth of tunnels and caves carved into the sandstone. The first room illustrates the history of the label with the oldest examples; the second collects labels from the various continents; further rooms show European labels, labels grouped by theme (historical events, anniversaries, famous people) and artists' sketches inspired by wine and by Verdicchio.
The route also includes the room of the Premio Nazionale Etichetta d'Oro (National Golden Label Award), the history of the Sagra dell'Uva (grape festival) with a large antique wine press, and the “Strada del Gusto” (Taste Route), a visual and olfactory itinerary through the land where the wines are produced, which ends with a tasting at the municipal wine bar EnoCupra.
