About the museum
The Museo Itinerario della Memoria e della Pace – Centro studi Giovanni Palatucci, established in 2008 and presented as the only museum of memory in Campania, is housed in the former Dominican convent of San Bartolomeo in Campagna. During the Second World War, following the racial laws, the town hosted two internment centres for Jews and political prisoners, set up in the Franciscan convent of the Concezione and in the Dominican convent of San Bartolomeo.
The route tells the “different story” of Campagna, linked to Giovanni Palatucci, an official of the foreigners’ office of the police headquarters (Questura) in Rijeka (Fiume), and to his uncle Giuseppe Maria Palatucci, bishop of the town. Using special permits and escapes abroad, Giovanni saved thousands of Jews, many of whom were taken in at Campagna; arrested by the Germans, he died in Dachau on 10 February 1945. In 1990 he was recognised as Righteous Among the Nations, and in 1995 he was awarded the Gold Medal of Civil Merit posthumously.
The exhibition combines panels with documents and photographs on the Shoah and on the lives of the internees with reconstructed spaces, such as a dormitory, and addresses current themes such as interreligious dialogue, tolerance and peace. The museum also organises exhibitions, book presentations, musical events and activities for schools and families.
