About the museum
The museum was founded in 2012 on the initiative of the association Sophis, in the Sant’Antonio monumental complex in the old town of Eboli, next to the 15th-century cloister. It documents the Allied landing on the Sele coast in September 1943, known as Operation Avalanche: on 9 September about 1,000 ships brought almost 200,000 British and American soldiers ashore on the Sele Plain.
The exhibition route covers more than 1,500 m² and runs along the cloister’s portico and through several themed rooms devoted to the British, American, Italian and German troops. Memorabilia, uniforms, military equipment and dioramas are on display, alongside around 90 photographic reproductions and information panels.
Among the main attractions are an exhibition of historical photographs from the archive of Angelo Pesce and the “sala emozionale” (emotional room), a multimedia and interactive space that recreates the stages of the landing. The museum also offers workshops, lectures and guided visits to the landing sites.
