About the museum
In 1983 the master craftsman Guerrino Lovato, originally from the Vicenza area, opened the Mondonovo workshop in Venice, where he made papier-mâché masks and stage machinery for theatre, opera and cinema. His masks were used by directors such as Franco Zeffirelli, Stanley Kubrick and Kenneth Branagh. In 2011 he decided to close the business and entrusted his heritage to the municipality of Malo, a town with a strong carnival tradition.
The entire workshop was moved to the first floor of Palazzo Corielli, an 18th-century residence of a family engaged in silk processing, and on 25 September 2011 it became a museum-workshop. The material is lent to the municipality for use, and master Lovato remains the heart of the museum.
The collection comprises about 250 works, 500 moulds (matrici), a library-archive, working tools, and antique objects and furniture. The route, led by cultural operators, tells the story of the mask as well as the history of art and costume. Papier-mâché workshops are held periodically. The museum is part of the Musei AltoVicentino network.
