About the museum
The Casa Rossa was built between 1765 and 1768 by the Jesuit engineer Leonardo Ximenes, under Peter Leopold of Lorraine, as part of the land reclamation of the Maremma. Ximenes believed that separating the salt water of the sea from the fresh water of the hinterland would prevent the exhalations then thought to cause malaria. The building, with its sluices and water gates, has largely kept its original interiors and was the main instrument of the project to drain the marsh of Castiglione della Pescaia.
Today it houses a multimedia museum that serves as the entrance to the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve. The route includes documentaries, projections onto a model of the territory and a “virtual hide” where visitors learn to recognise birds in flight by simulating a sighting.
Guided boat trips into the marsh, walks or bicycle excursions, birdwatching outings, nature workshops and educational activities for schools also start from the museum.
