About the museum

The Multimedia Museum of Transhumance, also known by the acronym MUMUT, opened in 2019 in Villanova del Battista, in piazza Michele Venuti. It was created to promote the cultural and anthropological heritage linked to transhumance, the seasonal movement of livestock along ancient drove roads (tratturi), which UNESCO has recognised as intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

The village is crossed by the royal drove road (regio tratturo) Pescasseroli–Candela, the great grassy route along which shepherds moved from Abruzzo to Apulia, and the museum traces the history of this practice in Irpinia with multimedia tools.

The building is a modern architectural work that plays with light and water effects to enhance the surrounding landscape. According to the Sistema Irpinia portal, the structure is fully accessible; visits are by booking.
