About the museum
The museum was opened on 16 September 2000 in the Palazzo dei conti Polcenigo-Fanna, known as the “Palazat”, a building erected between 1562 and 1594, severely damaged by the 1976 earthquake and later restored. Today the palace also houses the municipal offices of Cavasso Nuovo, and the museum occupies the top floor. It forms the “Work and Emigration” section of the Diogene Penzi Provincial Museum of Rural Life, whose main seat is in San Vito al Tagliamento, and is managed by ERPAC Friuli-Venezia Giulia in collaboration with the municipality.
The route, curated by Javier P. Grossutti, tells the story of the migration of workers from western Friuli in the first decades of the 20th century and of their destinations, with particular attention to trades typical of the Alpine and pre-Alpine area, such as mosaicists and terrazzo workers. About 400 photographs, documents and objects are arranged in twelve thematic sections in which images play a central role.
One room is permanently devoted to the graphic works of the Cavasso School of Drawing, active from the 1920s to the 1950s, including the drawings of the master Ernesto Calligaro. The museum is also a documentation centre for the study of emigration from and to Friuli.
