About the museum
The museum was founded in 1997 as a private initiative and later passed into public ownership. It is housed in Palazzo Fioritto, in Via Terzo Boschetto, in the historic centre of San Nicandro Garganico. The whole community helped to create it, donating many objects, tools and handmade items.
The route seeks to place the exhibits in a continuous historical sequence, from the Palaeolithic to the most recent traditions. The thirteen rooms include Roman archaeological finds, a nineteenth-century stable-cellar, a granary with threshing tools and a series of ploughs from the 17th to the early 20th century, typical means of transport, a room with the well and bread-making, the workshops of the carpenter, knife-grinder, shoemaker, blacksmith and tinsmith, the peasant's dwelling with its furnishings, and the tools of the dairy.
The most significant part consists of traditional clothing, votive offerings and the costumes of the Pastore and the Pacchiana. The museum also has a photo archive of about 3,000 images from the late nineteenth century to the present, a sound archive of recordings of oral tradition, and a video library.
