About the museum
The Palazzo Ducale in Martina Franca was begun in the second half of the 17th century at the wish of Duke Petracone Caracciolo, as the residence of the family that governed the town. The building combines Renaissance elements with decoration in the Lecce Baroque style and faces the main square of the historic centre.
Today the palace houses the town hall. Among its best-known rooms are the Arcadia, Mito and Bibbia halls, decorated in 1776 with fresco cycles by Domenico Antonio Carella.
According to the sources consulted, the complex also houses exhibition spaces, such as the Museo del bosco delle Pianelle, devoted to local fauna and flora and with a permanent display on rural life, and the Museo di Filippo I d’Angiò, which hosts contemporary painting exhibitions.
