About the museum
The civic picture gallery opened in 1994 and occupies the council chamber and adjoining rooms on the first floor of the town hall of Monterubbiano. The council chamber dates from the 19th century and is one of the four historic rooms that survive in the building.
The works on display were restored under the direction of the Soprintendenza ai beni artistici e storici delle Marche (heritage authority for artistic and historical property of the Marche). Most are canvas paintings by unknown artists: the religious subjects come from churches that are now deconsecrated, the others from noble families who bequeathed them to the municipality. They mostly date from the 17th to the 19th century, with some 16th-century paintings, two 20th-century copies of Botticelli and Crivelli by the painter Marzia De Marzi in Alesiani, donated in 1997, and a ballot box decorated by Pietro Alemanno and his workshop at the end of the 15th century.
Among the most important works is a Holy Family attributed to Francesco Menzocchi, painted between 1543 and 1545.
