Picture gallery with five works by Lorenzo Lotto, a Rococo Galleria degli Stucchi and a gallery of contemporary art on the upper floors of Palazzo Pianetti in Jesi.
The exhibition is devoted to the set designer Mario Pompei and presents sketches, sets and costumes in the exhibition rooms on the ground floor of Palazzo Pianetti. It forms part of the project “Dal teatro al museo... In scena!”, which brings together theatre and painting.
About the museum
The art collections of the Musei Civici di Jesi occupy Palazzo Pianetti, on Via XV Settembre. The Pinacoteca civica is on the piano nobile, where the Galleria degli Stucchi is also located: a long Rococo hall of about 70 metres, dating from the mid-18th century, built as a reception space. The core of the collection consists of religious works from the 15th to the 19th century, from the city’s churches, enriched over time by bequests, deposits, donations and purchases.
The best-known group is that of Lorenzo Lotto, which includes the Deposition, the Annunciation, the Madonna delle Rose, the altarpiece of Saint Lucy and the Visitation, dating from between 1512 and 1535. In the central hall, once a ballroom, the ceiling shows the last scene of the Aeneid cycle, while the first six rooms, the “Stanze di Enea”, are decorated with other scenes from the poem. Another group consists of more than two hundred 18th-century ceramic vases that belonged to the pharmacy of the old city hospital.
On the second floor, in the former private apartments of the Pianetti family, is the Galleria d’arte contemporanea. The rooms were renovated by the architect Angelo Angelucci in the late 1850s for the wedding of Vincenzo Pianetti and Virginia Azzolino; the palace was later sold to the Tesei family in 1901. The main core of the contemporary collection derives from the Premio Città di Jesi – Rosa Papa Tamburi, established in 1975 at the initiative of the Jesi-born artist Orfeo Tamburi, and from the project “La ruota del Lotto” of 1981, which brought works by artists such as Michelangelo Pistoletto and Luigi Ontani.
