About the museum
The Pinacoteca civica di Sarnano is located in Via Leopardi, in the heart of the historic centre, in the former convent of Santa Chiara. The building also houses the museum complex with the Museo dell'Arte Sacra (Museum of Sacred Art), the Museo delle Armi e della Caccia (Museum of Arms and Hunting), the Museo dell'Avifauna dell'Appennino (Museum of Apennine Birdlife) and the Museo dei Martelli (Museum of Hammers). It was the first picture gallery in the earthquake-affected area to reopen after the earthquake.
The jewel of the collection is Vittore Crivelli's Madonna Adoring the Child with Musician Angels (late 15th century). It is followed by works by Vincenzo Pagani, including Saint Lucy and Glory of Angels of 1525 and the polyptych of the Lamentation over the Dead Christ of 1529, those by Stefano Folchetti and Marchesiano di Giorgio da Tolentino, and the Last Supper by Simone De Magistris of 1607. Many canvases by 17th- and 18th-century painters from the Marche and Emilia include one by Pietro Procaccini on the founding legend of the Serafino.
The gallery also holds works from the church of Santa Maria di Piazza Alta, such as Pietro Alamanno's Madonna of Mercy and the processional banner by Giovanni Angelo d'Antonio of Bolognola, as well as a Deposition by De Magistris from the church of San Cassiano. A digital guide in PDF illustrates the works.
