About the museum

Villa Del Bene stands at Volargne, a hamlet of Dolcè, along the ancient Via Tridentina and near the Adige. It dates from the 15th century. In 1539 the residence passed to Giovan Battista Del Bene, and the Del Bene family extended it during the 16th century.

The western façade with its balconies was renewed in forms recalling the style of Michele Sanmicheli; a portal dated 1551 opens onto the road, and in the second courtyard stands a dovecote tower. The interiors were frescoed by Domenico Brusasorzi, Nicola Crollalanza and Bernardino India: the rooms include a loggia on the theme of vanity and Christian salvation, a hall with scenes of the Apocalypse, a humanist-style studiolo, and rooms with the stories of Joseph and of David and Judith. The religious subjects, unusual in a noble residence, have been linked to the anxieties of the era of the Reformation and the Council of Trent.

The villa was declared a monument of national interest in 1926 and has been State property since 1956. Since 2014 it has been managed by the Ministry of Culture through the Veneto museum network.
