About the museum

Vila Vipolže (Vipolže Villa) is a Renaissance villa that took its final form after numerous rebuilds in the Baroque period and at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Originally it was a hunting château of the Counts of Gorizia. On 14 April 1460 it was bought by Febo della Torre, as the exhibited document shows. The Della Torre counts often stayed in Vipolže and gave the building its greatest splendour.

There was probably already a park around the villa in the 16th century, and today the oldest cypresses in Slovenia grow here. After a fire in 1800 the villa was sold to the Attems family, who used it to store produce, especially wine. At the end of the 19th century it was bought by Count Rudolf Erard Anton, Baron Teuffenbach, who did not restore the old building but built a new villa. From the 60s of the 20th century the restoration and revival of the villa intensified, and its present flowering began in 2013.

In the entrance hall there is a permanent exhibition on the history of the villa, prepared by the Goriški muzej (Goriška Museum); models show how the Renaissance villa developed. Today the villa also hosts meetings, weddings and cultural events.
