About the museum
The Pētera Upīša Dārzkopības muzejs (Pēteris Upītis Horticulture Museum) was created on the basis of a wish expressed in the will of the plant breeder Pēteris Upītis: he wanted a garden museum to be created from the fruit-growing breeding laboratory he had led. The museum opened at Graudu iela 1, in the house where the breeder lived and worked; in 2009 it received its first accreditation. The museum's collection consists mainly of written and audiovisual objects about the life and work of Pēteris Upītis and about the history of Latvian horticulture and its science.
The permanent exhibition “Esības prieks” introduces Upītis's many-sided personality and his contribution to the development of horticulture. The outdoor exhibition covers the Institute's 43-hectare garden with themed walking trails; the lilac garden is especially popular, where more than 300 lilac varieties and hybrids grow on 5 hectares.
