About the museum
The Telefonijos muziejus is housed in a historic building in the centre of Šiauliai – the former town treasury, built in 1907–1908 to a design by the architect Stanislovas Kačkovskis. The building housed the town treasury (“Lobyno saugykla”, a treasure store), in 1919 the executive committee of the Šiauliai county council of workers' representatives, between the wars the Šiauliai branch of the Bank of Lithuania, and from 1998 a savings bank.
UAB “Extra Services” developed the museum over several years, assembling a considerable collection of exhibits and historical material on the history of telephony. In June 2019 it opened the modern historic Telefonijos muziejus. The exhibition tells of the oldest ways of transmitting information – whistling, gongs, bells, drums, fire signals and carrier pigeons – of the invention of the telephone (1876) and of the development of telephony in Lithuania up to today's VoIP systems. The museum organises overview tours and educational sessions.
