About the museum
The Radijo ir televizijos muziejus (Radio and Television Museum) was founded in 1982 on the initiative of the local historian Jonas Rimkevičius, with the help of pre-war radio amateurs. From September 1982 it was supported by a museum council formed at the Šiauliai television factory, and in 1994 it became a branch of the Šiaulių “Aušros” muziejus (“Aušra” Museum of Šiauliai).
In 2002, marking its 20th anniversary, a new exhibition on the history of sound and image reproduction devices was presented. The museum has gathered almost 5,000 exhibits. Besides the permanent exhibition, exhibitions are held for radio and television anniversaries, and since 1995 international competitions for young radio designers have been held.
The exhibition displays music boxes, gramophones, phonographs, radio receivers, televisions and other communication devices from the late 19th century onwards. Visitors can hear mechanical phonographs playing, search for stations on old radio receivers and send an SOS signal in Morse code with a telegraph apparatus.
