About the museum

The origins of the Nalšios muziejus go back to 1912, when Ignotas Šilkinis, who lived in Santaka village, began collecting historical and ethnographic material. In 1934 a congress of the Teachers' Union decided to found a public museum at the Švenčionys branch of the Teachers' Union; by 1936 it had about 500 antiquities, but in 1937 the museum was closed and the exhibits did not survive.

The Švenčionių kraštotyros muziejus was founded in February 1945; the first holdings comprised teaching aids used in schools, collections of minerals, coins and banknotes, and stone axes. On 19 November 1992 it was renamed the Nalšios muziejus. In a new building the museum opened to visitors on 14 February 2000: it has three exhibition halls (414 sq m) and an exhibition hall (136 sq m).

The museum's holdings include more than 62,000 archaeology, nature, history and ethnography objects. The largest is the archaeology department, which holds about 18,000 exhibits. Besides the usual exhibitions, the museum offers virtual galleries with 360° photographs.
