About the museum
The building on Aušros alėja was built in 1932 to the design of the architect Vladas Bitė as a primary school. The Šiaulių kraštotyros draugija (Šiauliai Local History Society) chose it for its museum when the earlier construction of a museum building fell through, and on 14 May 1933 a new exhibition of the “Aušra” museum opened here. During the war the building was occupied by a German military hospital, and during a bombing it was badly damaged by fire; in 1966 the building was returned to the museum.
In 2019–2022 the building was reconstructed, and in spring 2022 it opened its doors as the Šiaulių istorijos muziejus. Traditional museum work is combined here with new technologies.
The exhibition takes visitors through the history of Šiauliai from the first inhabitants to the proclamation of independence in 1918: it shows the everyday life and trades of the region's earliest people, the Battle of Saule (Saulės mūšis), the city's place in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Tsarist Russian period and traces of the First World War. A separate section is the exhibition of open storerooms with the museum's golden fund.
